Ascent Trip Reportlike others i managed to not read the directions and ended up at the "lower" trailhead... which really isn't a trailhead. it's actually really obvious how to get to the real trailhead, the "McLellan Mountain Trailhead". gmaps and OSM both have the roads wrong in this area, but once you're on the road which is signed for the trailhead just keep following the obvious maintained gravel road. i turned right, away from the obviously maintained road, where i should have turned left. oh well, it only adds a half mile and about 100' climb extra.
as described elsewhere: the hike is up an old jeep road, and others have suggested that only ATVs can navigate the road now. for the first half of the hike or so i wondered if a narrow 4x4 could make it (definitely not my range rover, it is likely too wide)... and at the 6640' saddle i got my answer: yes, a small pickup truck with government plates was parked there. to get to this saddle you'd have to spend much of the drive laterally tilted at about 10 degrees, but there are a few sections you'd be tilted at something like 25 degrees.
past the saddle the road gets rocky, and then too narrow for even the small pickup truck. based on the tire tracks in the road i think they tried to drive further up and then backed down to the saddle.
note that if you do try to drive this road there are only two places you can pull off the road and/or turn around: the saddles at 6040' and 6640'.
i was in the shade for more than half the climb up, it was really pleasant despite the high 70s temp at the trailhead.
there's a new register at the summit, placed by richard carey only a month ago.
