Ascent Trip Report

-Climbed to the top of Spruce Knob on a two-day backpacking trip that started at the Horton trailhead on the western side of the Seneca Rocks-Spruce Knob backcountry area, near Whitmer, WV. Was 24-miles roundtrip with short side trip to the high meadows area and a bushwhack to Horse Rock.
-Day one: Followed the Horton Trail over the western ridge guarding the Seneca Creek drainage, crossed the creek. After a side trip the high meadows area, climbed to the ridge connected to Spruce Knob. Camped near the northern terminus of the Huckleberry Trail. 7 miles and 2800 ft. elevation change.
-Day two: Hiked from camp south along Huckleberry Trail in the morning, summiting Spruce Knob at 10:00 a.m., then returned to break camp (9 miles RT). Spent an hour in the early afternoon bushwhacking to the top of Horse Rock, a nearby spruce-covered sub-peak in the spine that includes Spruce Knob. Took Judy Springs Trail to Seneca Creek, then Bear Hunter Trail to the Allegheny Trail, and back to the Horton Trail to return to the trailhead. 17 miles and 1700 ft. elevation change.
