Ascent Trip ReportAs fun as Oxford was, County House was the opposite. Dropping down from Oxford to Sykes Gap, a thunderstorm hit. I hung out and grabbed a bite to eat while buckets of rain poured down. I was happy to be in the col, as one or two strikes hit both mountains. When it eased up,I side-hilled it up County House, checking the GPS for the top. Passed some rotting 55 gallon drums, which really annoyed me...then got to the top, which is some sort of county or township building with a tower. It was pouring, teeming rain, so I walked to where I thought the high point was, but didn't linger as I read trip reports where they stated that there was 'no trespassing' signs. Heading down, I tried to find the road that my DeLorme PN-40 showed coming out of Sykes gap. With the pouring rain and the leaves on the ground the descent was a bit hairy, and I broke out the trekking poles. Hitting the col, I couldn't find the road the GPS said I was standing on. There was, at best, a right of way, so I followed that out to Jost Road, which I realized after I exited it, was no tresspassing. Gah. All in all, it was a fun day. 5 high points, 3 NJ1K, and one county highpoint. |
