Ascent of Birkenhead Peak on 2017-08-12
|Date:||Saturday, August 12, 2017|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Location:||Canada-British Columbia|
| Elevation:||8222 ft / 2506 m|
Ascent Trip ReportAbout an 8hr day hike, the goat trail fairly exposed but not bad by BX standards I thought (Harrison a fair bit more serious). Some exposure on summit ridge, on fairly poor rock but again not bad.
I hustled across from Mt Tod, starting the climb late am, wanting to avoid rain forecast for tomorrow. Access road very steep, OK in RAV4 AWD, some quite deep drainage channels but otherwise quite smooth surface. Mosquitos bad at trailhead.
After initial ridge the descent to the goat trail has a few cairns; top and bottom of gully at far end of goat trail are well cairned.
On main ascent to Birkenhead ie after the Microwave col, I pretty much stuck to the ridge crest, the occasional obstacle avoided R - traversing described in previous TR didn't sound inviting.
A few patches of snow, soft/avoidable, no equipment needed.
Highpoint is at N50.51070° W122.62103°, boulder 3m N of large cairn.
After the ascent, at Mt Currie back at the main road, I found a Thai restaurant, in quite an out of the way spot, a nice surprise.
