Ascent Trip Report

Hiked West Cave and Cave mountains with Dan and Sammy. Ski trails were very overgrown, in some places the weeds were over my head. The mountain biking was in full swing so we could not hike up those trails. Because of these facts, we ascended West Cave Mountain via a gravel access road for most of the way to the summit.

We hiked down along the Kaaterskill Cruise as far east as possible, then we bushwhacked up the overgrown Why Not (black diamond ski trail) to the summit. We went up what we believe to be bear trails through the weeds...there were definite paths in the weeds and lots of overturned rocks. We went into the woods and found the true summit, then we hiked back down the access road that went along Wanderer (green circle ski trail) back down to the base lodge.

Overall, good hike, 2 more of the Catskill 102 done...much more of a literal 'whack than I had imagined with the overgrown weeds.
