Ascent Trip Report

Started the day and Muriel Lake and worked my way down to the outlet of Summit Lake, where I could rock hop in spite of the high water. Found a trail just below the rocks I was expecting to find one and I should have continued to the other because what I had was an older and wetter trail that crossed a lake, very nearly. Found the trail to Desolation and followed it, passing by two well used Piute Trails. Continued all the way to Desolation, then progressed along outlets, none of which were as nice to cross as the Summit Lake one, past Mesa and Square. Looked down in the valley after Square Lake and didn't want to get my feet wet AGAIN and started up instead. The approach to the plateau above seemed 3rd class, so I wandered around and downward instead, making for a very difficult approach to the saddle. Stayed the night at Knob Lake (plenty of room there) and then headed down to the trail from the low spot right of the outlet with thoughts to work leftward. One bad step on the way down, but mostly a reasonable route. Hit the trail about 50 feet west of the "no fires" sign. My route was 4000 points, so I cut it off here rather than show the generally trail following route all the way back to South Lake. From there, I did manage to get creative enough to stay on trail and old road all the way back to parking at Tyee Lakes.

Plans were to go up Huxley, Agassiz, and Chocolate, but things weren't falling together for the first two and the last was just something to do on a last day after getting some sleep after the bigger mountain.
