Ascent Trip Report

The former trailhead Rifugio Gardeccia is no longer accessible by private car. Instead there is a shuttle bus from Pera, parking signposted on E side of main road, with minibuses running between 0700 and 1830, taking around 20 mins, €10 round trip. Apparently there is also a chairlift starting nearby that gets you within a short hike of Gardeccia. Lee declares tomorrow a (non mountaineering) work day so I take the shuttle and spend the night in the Rufugio Stella Alpina (immediately above the Gardeccia) in easy day hike range).

Stella is a quite small friendly place, good food, early night.

0800 start latest yet but hike up to top hut is mostly in shade and takes just over an hour, not the 2 hrs stated. Short break, helmet on then follow signed Kesselkogel path which heads straight up to base of cliff, takes ledge L, round corner for a slightly awkward 2m of scrambling (not exposed) then trail and cable alternating, ferrata has a few steep sections but not hard, nothing vertical except a short ladder. Summit ridge has an arete to cross, exposed in a few spots. HP is outcrop with damaged trig beyond and large cross a little further S.

40 mins enjoying view which includes Marmolada but the nearer towers dominate. Then back down ferrata (seems it's possible to continue and make a loop), stop at top hut for a Radler shandy, then back down the easy very busy trail to the Stella Alpina for lunch before taking the 2pm minibus down to Pena and strolling down the riverside path to main village to find Lee.

Wildlife highlights - a civet (I think, large slim cat with foxy face and long straight tail) and a snow finch.
