Ascent Trip Report

A nice short hike up the small volcanic mountain just south of the Blue Lagoon. From Reykjavik take route 41 toward Keflavik. Before you reach Keflavik, turn south on route 43 toward the Blue Lagoon and Grindavik. Go past the right turn into the Blue Lagoon. As 43 climbs up a small saddle, you'll pass a large rust, orange and yellow metal hot water tank on your right. Take a right turn and double back into a small parking area, where you can learn about the nearby geothermal plant from a large sign. Follow the crushed volcanic rock path to the trail head sign. We took the blue trail briefly through a bit of forest to some gory red-tipped stake trail markers. The rest of the trail is pretty obvious with some loose gravel that makes the down climb slippery even when dry - wish I'd had my poles! Great views of the Blue Lagoon and eventually the ocean and the town of Grindavik as you approach the summit. Roughly two miles out and back. Some up and down with roughly 700 feet net vertical gain.
