Ascent Trip ReportAfter the "summit" of Woodall mountain in MS, I drove to Oxford (see trip report for detail). I spent the morning getting an awesome breakfast pizza and then touring Rowan Oak, William Faulkner's home, which I really enjoyed. I then got on the road for a long day of driving. Destination was the gulf shores, so I had to drive almost completely across the state. I mad it to Mobile (AL) by late afternoon, and toured the USS ALabama and other boats at the museum. It ware really impressive, I especially enjoyed the self tour in the submarine. I drove on to Orange beach where I stayed at a beach hotel. The next morning I spent a little time at the beach before packing up and heading for the 2hr drive to Britton Hill, the highpoint of Florida. The drive was pretty through the pine forrests of the gulf coast. The highpoint was another drive up, but I enjoyed the little park surrounding the point. Quite nice for the lowest of all state highpoints. There was a beautiful granite marker, and nice view into the flatlands south of the point. There were some short hiking trails through the park, so I headed out for a short jaunt through the woods. This turned into a horror show, as there were huge spiders that had created large webs that crossed the trail After running into the 3rd web I got better at spotting them, but it still wasn't much fun. After getting back to the car, I finished the long drive back to Atlanta. I really enjoyed the trip, but the huge driving miles really started to wear on me by the end. Hopefully, not may more trips driving like that on my higpoint quest for all 50 peaks. |
