Ascent Trip Report

Highly recommend this one, although driving the 8.5 miles up the dirt road to the trailhead was very tedious. We did the loop going up to Carlo first. We had a short break atop Carlo. There are views and a few nice spots to sit amongst the krumholtz which also helped as a wind block. The hike over to Goose Eye is one of the best I have been on in the Whites. Soon after you leave Carlo you get a great look of what is to come. There is a fun ladder section with iron wrungs drilled in to the rock as well as a constructed log ladder to assist in the ascent. Once on top there are fabulous views in every direction. The weather was almost perfect, clear high clouds, a good stiff breeze, but the Presidentials were a bit hazy. We hung out on top for a good 30 minutes and although we passed a few thru hikers and other day trippers earlier, we had the summit to ourselves. The blue blazed trail down off Goose Eye is fairly steep but we took our time and made it back to the cars in fine fashion. We did make one minor mistake though. There are a few wide grass paths that branch off the gravel road. We took a right on the first one we came to assuming that it was the one we started out on. Note that the hiking trail crosses two of these before you hit the correct one again. It wasn't a big deal though, just meant that we had to finish the last 1/4 mile or so on the gravel road instead of the trail.
