Ascent Trip Report

A multitude of paths, cable cars and cog railways converge on this relatively low but prominent summit offering a range of ascent options according to conscience and wallet. Having spent 2 days driving we opted to walk from the very pleasant lakeside Vierwaldstattersee campsite though with hind sight I'd recommend driving to Kussnact where there is plenty of parking for CHF5/day thus avoiding the road walk. Following route 63 the traditional wooden Swiss chalets of Kussnact quickly give way to the clanking of bells, Beech forest and fields of lush grass grazzed by cows. At 1020m the path arrives at Seebodnalp with restaurants, large car park and alpine meadows below the steepening NW face of the mountain. From the flower filled meadows the path switch backs up through mixed Beech and Fir forest the rock a boulder conglomerate to the ridge where the cog railway is joined at Riggi Staffel 1600m. The crowds can be mostly avoided by keeping to the narrow path which follows the grassy ridge top with fine views to the summit. Views N over low hills and green farmland and S to rugged rock peaks and glaciers, sadly all a bit grey today. The summit has a nice granite survey block under prominent steel pyramid and a 96m tall mast with low level viewing platform. After lunch in the summit meadow we descend in rain showers via Rigi Kaltbad and Rabalp, good paths all the way.
