Ascent Trip ReportI parked on a Shooting Star, CR 860, pullout, a few hundred yards down from where Haycock, CR 635 tees. There is a gated road that slopes down to the west at the pullout. I hiked down it and then across a narrow field and small stream. Began a bushwhack upslope to the WSW curling around one home before crossing one graqvel road and arriving at another. The bushwhack was relatively easy thru somewhat steep terrain. The second dirt road ends at a home. In lieu of the usual posted signs, there was a welcome one. The gravel road changes to grassy as it continues westward across the front lawn of that end of the road home. A dog barked from the porch, but no one came out to challenge me. I followed the grassy road towards the fire tower which was now in sight.
The grassy road continued across somewhat level open areas before being blocked by a gate with a faded posted sign. I continued on beyond the gate walking along the road uphill thru forest to the fire tower on the high point of the ridge. First two flights up the tower are minus treads.
On the way back I skirted southward around and below the home so as not to further provoke the dog. The return was uneventful. I did utilize some old logging roads to get back to that small stream crossing.
A quicker way to get to that last home on the ridge before the fire tower would be to drive up Russell Road off of Haycock. Not sure where you could park, but if you did in the vicinity of that home, the hike to the fire tower could be accomplished in a matter of minutes. |
