Ascent Trip Report

We woke up at Limeklin State Campground in the town of Inlet, and set out towards Cathedral Rock-Latham Fire Tower. We used Ranger School Road in Wakakena, as a GPS address, and set out for a 2 hour drive on NY-28N, which lead us to NY-3 W to eventually to County Rd 61 in the town of Fine. From there we begane to see signs for the Ranger School and followed the GPS to what looked like a small empty campus or housing/community dweleing. There was a sign indicating we had reacher the Ranger School and it had a few options written with arrows poiting you in the correct direction. A tiny brown and yellow sign hung below which an arrow pointing that said "Firetower. We followed the sign up a small paved road in what looked like a campus that was empty because it is summertime, to a very large paved parking lot, with a gated gravel road to the right which is where you enter to find the trailhead. There is a small white posted sign on the gate to your rigt as you enter the parking lot that indicates there is a firetower trail starting "220 feet to the right".

Park in the lot. Walk past the gate and walk up the gravel road until you see a sign on the right that says "Latham Firetower" with an arrow pointing up to the right. Follow that trail, which is marked with white trail markers baring the numbers 10, and later you will see ones baring the number 13. Trail 13 and 10 seemed to intersect a few times but we stuck to trail 10, not knowing if we were even on the correct path until we ran into a fellow hiker in a forest of pines and ferns, who informed us we were almost there. The trail gains significant elevation close to the summit in a the form of moss covered stone lined narrow switchbacks which lead to wooden stairs which had been placed in order to bypass a small boulder scramble on the ledge of a small cliff.

The firetower atop Cathedral Rock is no longer maintained by the DEC. It is now maintained by the SUNY Ranger School
