Ascent Trip Reportleft SP at 0442, started raining steady in the Valley but stopped just past Sugarloaf access, did not drive down to outlet figured it would be difficult getting out if it rained hard. set out at 0740, trail actually dry in many spots. climb up to pond quite easy, maint. good, steep last pitch up to South(few small patches of snow), North quite easy. weather - heavy fog, wind 40-45 knots - had to lean into it to stand up on North. Headed down 1020 checked caretaker tent both times by - Jeff (caretaker) caught me with about 1.2 mi. to go, he was headed down for wood chips. Had a very nice conversation, showed me some AT history, talked of native brook trout reproduction and spoke to some local geology (Hurricane Rock). Nice, engaging person. He also made sure I knew where to go to volunteer. made the car at 1250 then proceeded to scout the Caribou valley road, couldn't cross the bridge at 4.1 mi., not enough clearance in the Forester. a couple 10 in. logs would have fixed that. |
