Ascent Trip ReportWe walked from our campsite at Merlischachen on the shores of Vierwalstattersee (www. seecamping.ch) at 437m to the village at the head of the lake, Kussnacht. Here we picked up signs for path 63, signosted Rigi Kulm and Seeboden Alp. We ascended through meadows and forest on a well marked trail, crossing the road several times until we reached Seebodenalp after about 2 hours of walking . Here there is a large carpark ( about CHF12 all day) and restaurant at 1020m .it was overcast but hot and sultry.
We continued through pasture and forest with cowbells clanging and lovely wild flowers, upwards on the well marked path to Rigi Staffel , after a further 2 hours. This has a cogwheel railway station, several hotels and , compared to the peace of the ascent , was very crowded. Most had ascended by train or cable car from the other side.
We turned left and followed the obvious concrete path and railway line for a final 30 minutes up to the summit. There is a 96m red and white comms tower with ' 'saucers' at the bottom, visible from the valley. There is also a trig marker, and a fenced viewpoint. We had a picnic lunch in the surrounding meadows as skies darkened and views disappeared. There was a Swiss wrestling event and rural procession of cheese makers going to their summer alpine pasture. We returned to Rigi Staffel, continued along the ridge in rain and took a slightly different , equally quiet and pleasant marked and well maintained route back to Kussnacht. Then we walked the final two miles along the lake shore to our campsite just as heavy rain and thunder commenced. 17.3 miles and 1300m of ascent ( with very little reascent).
