Ascent Trip ReportLovely hike. Originally I planned on testing out the trail up Holman Canyon (it's listed as a trail anyway on topo maps). However, when I arrived at the parking area for the trailhead it was full of trailers and other vehicles. I wasn't interested in parking inside people campsite so I decided to go for plan B and drive up to the top of the ridge. I personally think that there would be little difference time-wise between hiking up Holman Canyon and driving up somewhere along the ridge and hiking. I guess that's the idealist in me thinking that 2800 feet of climbing won't take as long as it usually does. The road going up to the ridge is mediocre. There are definitely some nice spots, but there are also plenty of very rocky nasty segments. The road actually seems to improve once above the ridge and beyond the first mile or so. It's narrow, yes, but pretty smooth. Anyway, I stopped at a nice little meadow and hiked the rest of the way to get a little distance. It was a fun hike. There was a large snowdrift on the road below the peak, which will probably stop most vehicles wider than an ATV. Of course, the snow will probably be gone by next week.
Views from the summit are stellar. What's sad is there are these amazing red cliffs right below the peak and you pretty much can't see them from anywhere along the road. Maybe from somewhere along the ridge they'd be visible.
