Ascent Trip ReportI approached from the Pole Creek Trailhead. I parked about 1.6 miles before the trailhead as the road started to become hich clearance 4wd only and I no longer felt comfortable driving my Subaru Forester. It was a nice road hike from there until the
Drive through the town of SUmpter until you reach Cracker Creek Road.
0.0 miles - Turn right on Cracker Creek Road
1.3 - Turn right onto 5536, sign indicating 5 miles to Pole Creek Trail, ignore the sign indicating that the road is closed 2,000 feet ahead sign
3.7 - Stay right
5.0 - Left onto 150
5.3 - Stay right (I think this is road 160)
6.6 - Turn hard right onto 170 at a 3 way intersection
7.2 - Park slightly beyond the gate where road 200 crosses 170.
I hiked up road 200 approximately 1.6 miles until the road ended and the trail began. I then followed the Pole Creek Ridge trail about 0.6 miles until intersected the Elkhorn Crest Trail. I followed this about 2 miles until I was just below the summit at a point where the trail makes a hard left. I then scrambled my way up to the summit. I ran into three small snowfields but they were easily bypassed. I didn't see anyone else all day and I was just the second person to sign the summit register this year.
The views were absolutely stunning and I would love to do more exploring in this area. There was virtually no water available on this hike so plan on bringing all of the water that you'll need.
