Ascent Trip Report

Bald Knob is far from bald. While there are some places where the forest is thin, the ground is generally covered heavily by vegetation in summer along this part of the AT, and the summit is covered in trees. The route up is simple: follow the well-marked and obvious Appalachian Trail to the top. The highest spot / true summit appears to be just off the trail to the left (when headed northbound). It might not be exactly at the location shown on the topo maps: use your judgment and tag all the options if you're in doubt (and it matters to you). Plenty of flowers were blooming, especially along the upper half of the route; the ground was carpeted with yellow jewelweed (Impatiens pallida) in some places. This was my second visit to this summit, the first being more than 15 years ago. Just as I arrived at the top I noticed a guy messing with a backpack. He told me that I was a little too late -- he was a radio operator and had just put away his equipment. (I thought maybe he was talking about lunch.) He said that he'd been talking to someone in South Dakota. Other than this guy, I only saw a single couple, heading up as I was heading down.
