Ascent Trip ReportFlew into Denver on Friday night. Left early Saturday morning driving to Black Mesa trailhead- stopping in La Junta Colorado for supplies. Arrived at Black Mesa trailhead later in day. Hiked to summit and back in 100 degree heat- way too hot! Stopped for photos at summit monument, signed registration book, and took photo of benchmark. 8.4 miles round trip. A few lizards and one rattlesnake near summit monument. Stayed at Black Mesa B&B that night. Wonderful place and highly recommended- less than 3 miles from trailhead. Stayed in new Sunrise Cabin, very comfortable for the 4 of us. Monty and Vicki were wonderful hosts; cooking us a fabulous breakfast the next morning. The scenery in that area was spectacular. The next day we drove a few miles to the Tri-State monument (Colorado, Oklahoma, New Mexico); also found the road that led to the Dinosaur Footprints. State Highpoint #36! |
