Ascent Trip Report

Akrafjall has been on my radar for almost 15 years now. Somehow when I lived in Iceland, I never took the time to hike it. I found a map with the hiking paths around Akranes back in late 2003 when I first visited Akranes and thought that it would make a fine hike. When I lived in Iceland I was not a peakbagger. I certainly regret that I was not a peakbagger then as I visited almost every corner of the country during my 3+ years there and have very few real peaks to show for it. Anyhow, Becca and I had a day and a half stopover in Iceland, so we decided that we wanted to hike either Esja or Akrafjall when we arrived. As we drove on Reykjanesbraut towards Reykjavík, we noted that Akrafjall was out of the clouds and Esja was socked in. That made the decision easy and we headed across the Hvalfjörður tunnel to Akranes for this peak. Naturally, they have installed some kind of electronic toll pass in Hvalfjörður since I moved away in 2006 and I ended up in the wrong lane to pay cash in the rental car. Helvítis! We found the trailhead without any issues and began the hike up under cloudy but nice skies. As we approached the final few hundred meters to the summit, it began to rain, but it let up after we had been on top for just a few minutes and we had excellent weather the rest of the time on the hike. Following the usual summit pics, we signed the register and were bummed to not see my friend Rob Woodall in there from just a few days earlier. He could not get the box open and Brits are not as into the registers as we kani are. The hike down was quite pleasant and we had plenty of time to get to our room in Laugarvatn with time to take in Gullfoss and Geysir after dinner when the crowds had departed. Pics
