Ascent Trip ReportFine halfday peak with minor scrambling and nice waterfalls enroute; a stream to ford.
After a day of high winds we gave up on Snaefellsjokull and decided instead to bag this peak before our afternoon flight home, a nice scenic end to our week in Iceland.
Route up from S as per Petter and Greg, forking R and parking at end of dirt road. From parking area, ridge straight ahead is Tungukambur; up to L is Skardshyrna with Littlahorn in front looking very fine in morning sun: might make an interesting scrambly way up. Heidharhorn is out of sight behind Skardshyrna. We head up keeping R of the stream (easiest to keep close to bank) then boulder hop across below the top waterfall and climb to the ridge which we follow to summit as per Petter's report, with easy scrambling at a couple of spots.
Gorgeous clear morning with views past last weekend's peaks Akrafjell and Esja, to Reykjavik. Cairn at highpoint with metal trig marker fixed to one of its top stones, now vertical but presumably horizontal and at ground level when first installed. Spire like structure adjacent presumably also trig related. Icy wind so a brief stop only.
We descend more directly downslope, to SE, avoiding the scrambling and using snow slopes to minimise the stony ground. Boulder hop the stream above the upper waterfall and pleasant sunny meander downstream back to car, 2h10 up, 3h48 round trip.
We call back at Akranes campsite, far busier on a sunny Sunday then when we stayed last rainy Sat eve - for a shower and to organise our gear prior to flying home after a successful 9 day 10 summit trip, 2300km circuit, a good taster for this fine mountain country although the weather and prices are a little hard to adjust to!
