Ascent Trip Report

From N, approx beeline with some large easy snow patches and two streams to boulder hop or wade.

We climbed this in the afternoon en route to Snaefellsjokull. Parked to N at head of fjord just E of bridge, where a track leads to some sheep pens (high clearance useful for where we parked, but easy parking to W along road). Private sign before pens, which we took to relate to vehicles not walkers.

Track continues a short way then we climbed keeping R of main stream, passing fine waterfalls, continuing to keep main stream on our L, crossing two side streams (just possible without wading) then climbing wide reentrant which leads towards the main summit, mainly snow, firm but not needing crampons. We keep R of a spur and emerge on the col at foot of West ridge. Had planned to climb this, but very strong wind so we traverse S face which is slightly sheltered although loose underfoot, with a snow slope to cross, easy angled. Heavy hail turning to rain, very unpleasant for a while. We emerge on SW ridge which is sheltered and a surprisingly easy route to summit.

Summit itself, small outcrop, exposed to full force of wind. East summit may from map be almost as high, but we don't get a view of it, and in the foul conditions don't attempt to reach it. Back down the way we came; traversing south face with wind and rain full in our faces. Navigation at col tricky in 10m visibility and not good conditions for following a GPS track but we refind the spur and snow slope, mostly nice descent but have to watch the odd icy patch. Rain relents awhile but raining again as we reach car after a quite tough 6h15 round trip.

Camp the night at Tradir, cold and windy but mostly dry.
