Ascent Trip ReportDriving directions:
Drive south of Selma, Oregon, on Oregon Hwy 199.
0.0 Turn west onto Eight Dollar Mountain Road at milepost 24.
0.9 Pass the Eight Dollar Mountain Botanical Wayside road to your right.
1.0 End of Josephine County maintenance. Road becomes single lane with damaged pavement.
2.9 Cross the Illinois River on a single lane bridge.
3.2 Pavement ends, road becomes FSR 4201.
3.9 Bear Right at a Y junction to remain on FSR 4201.
10.0 Continue Straight past a road to your right.
14.9 Turn Right onto FSR 142 (signed)
15.4 Turn Left at a T junction and arrive at the Kalmiopsis Rim Trailhead.
The trailhead has a toilet and a distant view of Pearsoll Peak to the north. The trail starts near a blank sign on the south side of the road - don't follow an abandoned road leading west.
The trail to Chetco Pass is in good shape, though it passes through an extensive and old burn and it can be a little hard to follow as you start climbing north from Eagle Gap. On the descent to Eagle Gap and north of Eagle Mountain the brush encroaches a bit on the trail but the trail is still easy to follow. The trail becomes a road on the descent to Chetco Pass.
All signage has been destroyed at Chetco Pass. This is a road junction. Continue approximately straight on one of the roads, passing just right of a burned out old truck. The road traverses north and crosses some possibly seasonal creeks. This is the most moist part of the hike.
The road climbs to a junction at about 4220 feet. The signage here has also been destroyed, but bear left and climb the road to a ridge top at about 4500 feet. The road then descends, with excellent views of the south face of Pearsoll Peak, to a saddle, begins traversing across the south face of Pearsoll Peak, and becomes a trail on the traverse. The trail completes the traverse and climbs the SW ridge to the summit lookout.
The views are excellent. The actual summit appears to be west of the lookout. On the return hike to the trailhead I detoured about 100 yards to the west of the trail to tag the summit of Eagle Mountain.
