Ascent Trip Report

Via S ridge as per Greg and Petter's reports, 5h15 round trip with little snow except at summit, minor bushwhack issues, loose ground arduous to climb but straightforward.

After yesterday's Hakarlshaus ascent we travel across in the morning, stopping en route at the hugely impressive Dettifoss and also Godafoss.

Parked at gate just E of Skaro entrance, walked up track, L across bridge then up to L, a little brushy, or can use wide track further L. Then good trail along top of moraine bank which curves round to foot of main ridge. At area of low birch scrub, trail makes ascending traverse L then becomes more obvious heading straight up thru the birch.

Above is fairly loose and a little arduous at the steeper spots, nice plant life to distract from the hard work, and views of surrounding steep flat topped ridges. One steep snow slope which we can bypass. A final steep climb then plateau, with large areas of angular rock awkward to walk on. Blamannshattur has a well built cairn, where we shelter to put on all our clothing to keep out the cold strong wind, which could be bad once we turn for home, with rain forecast and the sky to SW looking unfriendly.

1km march thru snow to level highpoint, photos, GPS then away, keeping L in lee of wind, a few spots of rain coming to nothing. Lower down we follow our upward route, exploiting a few snow slopes, scree running the steeper sections, wind less fierce.

Back at car we find a privately owned campsite a short way N along the coast, less pricey than we've found elsewhere. Heavy rain soon after we arrive so we're glad of the kitchen, warm and dry against the unfriendly weather.

Tomorrow a wet forecast, plan is Hrisey (island) in morning then Tindastoll pm.
