Ascent Trip ReportFrom SW as per Petter. Very well used trail to Thervellshorn 740m with viewfinder and large cairn just beyond. Then approx beeline to summit, en route visiting unnamed level SW summit, small cairn amidst what Martin identified as patterned ground, a polygonal pattern formed by frost action on unvegetated ground. Large snow patches higher up easier underfoot than the stony ground. Large cairn at or near level highpoint.
Cold and drizzly, soon head down following upward GPS track. Back on main trail a lot of walkers and runners, a race on today plus the Mt Esja Ultra, involving several loops on S side of mountain, topping out at Thervellshorn.
Up and down in 5hr, avoiding a soaking although quite a wet drive east, with Gullfoss en route to Skaftafell for Hvannadalsnukur planned tomorrow.
