Ascent Trip ReportSE Face (AG I (40* snow)). Approach from Alvord Hot Springs up Wild Horse Canyon to Wild Horse Lake. 5,533 elevation gain and 18.5 miles round trip.
Party of three: Brad (tf), Kristen & H. My first summit of Steins Mountain.
Approach: 8 miles and 4,250 elevation gain from Alvord Hot Springs (4,200) to Wild Horse Lake (8,450). The first 3.5 miles is on a dirt road and the last 4.5 miles is bushwhacking.
It snowed 2 feet overnight in a fluke (un-forcasted) spring storm.
Climb: 1,283 elevation gain from high camp to summit. 2.5 miles rt back to high camp. We gained the summit via the face and descended via a snowed over road to a cutoff above Wild Horse Lake.
Out: 8 miles (4 was now in snow).
