Ascent Trip Reporti drove in from red bluff. i let gmaps navigate me to the ides cove trailhead, and it picked some pretty interesting choices: it regularly chose a shorter 4x4 trail up a ridge rather than the obviously more traveled graded road beside it. this was fine by me, my truck and i had a blast: see youtube video of one of the segments. if you're not looking for that sort of fun it was pretty easy to figure out the well graded road.
a big snow pile on the road stopped me short of the trailhead by a mile. that was fine with me too: a nice excuse to make this otherwise too-short hike a bit longer. i followed the road for a bit, then cut cross-country because it was easier than dealing with the snow piles.
i was able to avoid most of the snow on the route up: i never found an excuse to pull out my microspikes. a couple times i'd climb some rock to go around the snow.
what a great hike! what a great mountain!
for the drive out i was headed home to SF bay area: again i let gmaps guide me ... wow it did not pick well. more 4-wheeling ensued, including bypasses up road banks around uncleared trees, and getting out to clear some deadfall. there's been some road development which google has no idea about, and one road was somewhat permanently closed with a big tree that had obviously fallen years earlier. i'm really not sure what it was trying to do. i eventually just kept following the obviously more-used paths downhill, and popped out on the M2.
i probably should have just read other trip reports' directions :) but i had fun (and i had maps).
