Ascent Trip Report

We had a late start but it was a gorgeous day. Even though this is regarded as a muddy hike and we were there soon after the snow melted it really wasn't that bad. There were plenty of spots along the trail that had standing water but I was expecting worse. It was definitely a nice trail with lots of moss covered rocks. We attempted to bushwhack to the old Indian camp but were unsuccessful in locating it. We may have passed through it because there was a large open area but it was flooded with water so I wouldn't think that the Indians would have set up camp there. Once back onto the Long Path with continued on skipping the first plane crash site. We walked around the snowmobile loop looking for the herds path up to the summit of High Peak. We cut up early making a short bushwhack until we ran into the herds path. The push up on the herds path was definitely the highlight of the hike. It had some steep sections towards the top that were fun to negotiate. After reaching the summit we signed in at the ammo canister next to the piece of a plane then took the path to the left to look for the second plane crash site. No luck finding the plane crash but we did locate the second USGS marker on the trip back to the summit. After that we quickly located the first USGS marker. Both markers were very close to the clearing on the summit. Then we proceeded down the path to the right to find Hurricane Ledge. Once we arrived at Hurricane Ledge we hung out for about 10 minutes to take in the view which was great then went back to the summit of High Peak where we had a quick snack before returning the way we came and headed back to the parking lot.
