Ascent Trip ReportA very popular hike for locals out of Golden and their dogs. Trails are well marked and maintained and the routes have nice views. I took the right loop which winds all the way into the back to attack the peak. The views are good but the prominence on this peak is poor as it ties to a taller peak registered on peakbagger on the SW side. Jefferson County has signage asking you not to go hike the higher prominent peak because it is conservation lands - part of the park but off limits to people. Shame it looks really nice. I see others have tagged it.
The summit blocks are not all that exciting but on the way down to the eastern side of the loop there are some nice pinnacles that you can go out take cool photos and scramble some. Their are unofficial use trails to the peak and the pinnacles. The views coming off the back side are particularly fun to see the switch back road up Look out Mountain and the Big White "M". Fortunately Jefferson County has not signed them or blocked the use trails and the summit and pinnacles get a lot of side trail traffic.
On the way down I set my eyes on the extra credit small sub peak. It actually has enough prominence to exceed the 100 foot threshold. After hiking up over 1000 feet I was most disappointed that Galbraith is not a 100 foot prominence peak and its parent which is - is off limits. So I ran down and tagged the small extra credit subpeak that at least has 140 feet of prominence and nice views of Castle Rock.
