Ascent Trip ReportStorms chased us off Stone Mountain, and so we were planning for the long drive back to Raleigh via Boone. We noticed on the way to Boone that the weather was clearing nicely just as we passed Meat Camp Road. Quite the memorable name, and I remember taking this road to Snake Mountain over 10(!) years ago. I also remembered that I hadn't yet bagged Rich Mountain Bald, so my 11 year old son and I decided to go for it.
There is an unmaintained trail to the top. It runs parallel to the fence towards a fenced enclosure, where it then turns right to ascend the mountain. I highly recommend following this trail. You'll avoid most of the briars. It's of course much easier to follow from above.
As for us, we parked at Rich Mountain Gap and went up through the fields. We eventually found the unmaintained trail and a few pieces of old orange flagging on trees along the path. Excellent views along the way.
