Ascent Trip Report

From the trees at the col leading to the main summit, I made my way to a mossy glade. There were steep rocky bands and some short trees in front of me and in order to bypass them, I veered right up gentler terrain. Climbing over lichen and grass-covered rock, I quickly made it to the bare summit. Slabs dropped precipitously west and I spent some time looking at the great scenery.

When it was time to head back, I followed my tracks to the edge of the ridge and then dropped down in the trees. There was no point trying to avoid them as I was not going to the main summit again. Still, I reached more open ground and headed south. As the slope steepened, the forest closed in on me although it was never as dense as on the ascent. I was surprised how easy it was to reach the treeline at the logging patch. I emerged west from where I had made my ascent, closer to the center, and decided to go straight down in a rut right in front of me.

This rut was much nastier than the one I followed uphill. I had to be extra careful as there were many unstable logs and I tripped a few times on the way. Back at the logging road, I was relieved that this part was over. My joints were starting to show some pain from the long day and this last leg didn't help at all. The way back to the car from this point on was straightforward, though, and it wasn't long before I was back at my trailhead. Happy to have squeezed a third unplanned 1000m summit in this day, I drove back to RTE 62, stopping to check out swollen rivière Malbaie at the bridge. Then it was a long drive back to Québec.
