Ascent Trip ReportI was short of time when I visited Effigy Mounds National Monument highpoint, so I made my approach from a private farm to the southwest instead of from the actual monument to the east along the Mississippi River. Fortunately, I found the owner of the land I had to cross to be very friendly and he allowed me to cross a crop field even though it was covered with new sprouting corn. From my car on the edge of this cornfield, my GPS indicated I was only .26 miles from the highpoint. I covered this distance in 8 minutes after reaching a fence row separating the cropland from the forested National Monument where the fence passed over a mound of higher ground. I returned to my car with the entire trip taking 26 minutes, which was much faster than the time it would have required to hike to the same spot from the east. |
