Ascent Trip Report

As in most of the other trip reports, I climbed the peak from the logging roads on the NE side. There was still a significant amount of snow on the north side of the peak, which meant that I wasn't going able to start as high as some of the other have. In the end, I settled for parking at the hairpin turn on the road near the Fruit Growers Supply Co sign. It turns out that you can easily drive up that spur another 0.2 mi to a nice flat section good for camping.

From my parking spot, I followed old logging roads up the east ridge until it becomes a use trail and finally fades out on the side of an open slope. From there it was just a matter of traversing up and avoiding little pockets of brush. The north side of the ridge still held feet of snow, but the trees mostly eliminated the brush. It was just a matter of going up the final few hundred feet until encountering the summit. There are beautiful views of Shasta.

There are roads that are not on the topo map and I did make a wrong turn for about 0.5 mi. For the most part, the correct road is the most travelled, but there is one juction where this is not the case. I also ran into other vehicles going up and down, which can be a bit of a pain. However, the road is in good shape and there are turn outs. It could be possible to get something like a Honda quite a ways up there, but I wouldn't recomend it. There are plenty of branches and rocks that either require clearance or would need to be moved. I did not encounter anything that made me wish I had 4WD, but a few sections are pretty steep. I recorded directions for the junctions on my way down:

# - Exit I-5 at exit 789 (Ash Creek) heading W
# 0.0 Turn left on Bradley-Henley Road
# 0.2 Turn right onto dirt road marked Jilson Mine
# 2.0 Continue straight
# 3.0 Continue left through large junction on ridge
# 4.1 Fork left up road that starts climbing, the possibly more heavily travelled road going straight is not on the maps
# 5.2 Hairpin turnout. Park here, or continue on main road to higher start points, or turn left past Fruit Co sign for low elevation TH
# 5.4 Park in the big open area, route starts on the road behind the berm
