Ascent Trip ReportI didn't do much research prior to coming to the area to tag this peak after doing Grass Mountain earlier in the day. I had a few GPS tracks on my phone, one for someone that was able to drive to the top and another starting on the north side. I approached from the north and didn't realize the standard route is from the south and requires going over Gunsight pass to access. Instead, I saw the GPS track start not too far from where I was at a junction and headed there. There is clearly a lot of ongoing logging activity in the area, so the roads I traveled on to my parking spot were pretty good though a few sections were a bit mushy from all the rain. I started to drive past where I parked but quickly realized that the road that continues on to the summit is overgrown. It is perfectly fine for hiking, however. There are no gates from the north side, so an ATV could make it all the way to the summit ridge.
Anyway, I hiked to the top in marginal weather and tromped around for a bit looking for the respective high points for the east and west peaks.
After finishing this hike, I continued on to get Roman Nose. Having come from the north, I wanted to go out via logging roads to the south. It was very easy to do after looking at the map. After returning to the main logging road from the alternate trailhead, I continued on it to Gunsight Pass. From there I simply followed the obvious artery all the way down to Horton. The road clearly sees a ton of traffic and was easy to navigate even in the dark.
