Ascent Trip ReportThe easiest approach to the Hillsdale County highpoint is from a paved road from the east, but you pass by a posted youth home and quickly reach a posted metal gate. Using Ben Lostracco's (always excellent) trip report, I tried to get permission from the residence just 100 yards to the south. I was greeted by an extremely friendly lady and I knew instantly this had to be the nice lady Ben had referred to in his report. It was no problem getting permission from her and she even mentioned that her husband had cleared some trails to the highpoints. Once I started hiking I was very thankful for the ease of travel due to these new trails because bushwhacking would have been horribly difficult due to the dense vegetation. The only problem was the network of trail choices available and I had to backtrack a few times in order to select a different path. I reached the southern Hillsdale County highpoint candidate after hiking .68 miles in 16 minutes, but that includes all my route finding errors. I only had to hike .2 mile to reach the middle highpoint candidate, which I covered in 5 minutes. This spot had a small but nice clearing, however, all three highpoints had no views due to the forest. I reached the northern highpoint candidate in just 2 minutes, but it was about 10 yards east of the trail. At this point I had traveled .97 miles so far. From my GPS I obtained the following elevation data: South - 1270 feet Middle - 1284 feet North - 1279 feet Based on this information, it seems the middle highpoint candidate is likely the Hillsdale County highpoint. I made it back to my car in just 16 minutes and only had to travel .77 miles, however, I returned using the cropland to the south and hiked along its perimeter back to the starting point. My entire visit to this highpoint, including talking to the friendly resident was nearly one hour with over 1.6 miles of hiking.
