Ascent of Mount McCausland on 2017-05-01Others in Party: | David
| Date: | Monday, May 1, 2017 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Motorized Transport to Trailhead: | Car | Peak: | Mount McCausland | Location: | USA-Washington | Elevation: | 5747 ft / 1751 m |
Ascent Trip ReportWe started from the pullout on US-2 at 8 AM. Smithbrook Road was entirely covered with compact snow. After leaving the road, we traveled on soft snow up to the pass between McCausland and Lichtenberg. We were on the summit at 12:30 PM.
At this point the snow was balling under our snowshoes so we booted down from the summit. I sank into the snow up to my thigh on the convex section of the slope. Luckily it was a cold, cloudy morning. We did not hear nor see any new avalanches.
We decided to return the way that we came and arrived back at the car at about 3:15 PM. Our trip total was 9.7 mi and 2927' elevation gain.
