Ascent Trip ReportRose and I are down to this nice area of NY State for a 3 day hiking trip primarily to climb Stillwater Mountain and thereby finish my PB List "Fire Tower Challenge (Adirondack/Catskill)" for the THIRD TIME. I first finished this List back in November of 2008 on Black Mountain, then again on May of 2015 on Loon Lake Mountain (see their respective TRs) . This is another of those evolving lists, something like "NH 52 with a View".
I should note that of this date there are now 30 mountains on this List.
The signed TH Parking is on Old Moose Road 15.6 miles northwest of Hwy #28 at Eagle Bay (the last 7 miles of this road is dirt). The 1 mile long blue blazed trail is a moderate climb (nicely shown on Jillian Smith GPS Track).
One needs to climb the 7 flights of stairs for the best views. The Firetower, restored by volunteers, sits on a rock outcrop with "USGS Survey Marker STILLWATER 1942" plus an ADK BM. Picnic table is to one side.
