Ascent Trip ReportI don't believe you will make this highpoint a quick grab and go. There is too much to see here. Dowdell Knob is located 1.3 miles at the end of a dead end road for the Pine Mountain Trailhead with hours of 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. There is a $5.00 self-service fee station there, but I didn't see anyone using it. The actually highpoint was only 60 feet away from where I parked my car. A benchmark is located just to the right of the covered trailhead for the Pine Mountain Trail. I searched for the other three directional benchmarks that I remember reading about on someone else's trip report, but I was unable to find them. I think they were removed during area improvements. Fortunately, the main summit benchmark was spared. A short distance south of the highpoint is the Dowdell Knob Overlook, which is definitely something you do not want to miss. Historical signs in the area explain that President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited this place often and he even had a grill built here which still stands today indicated with a plaque. There is even a statue of President Roosevelt sitting on a bench with enough room so you can have your photo taken sitting beside him! I spent 30 minutes enjoying this area.
