Ascent Trip Report This was a private hike with George Christiansen. My primary goal was Mugu which I needed for my 5X LP list. We met at the trail head. I took the 101 to 23 south to PCH turned right (west) and went about 9 miles to the trail head. It is right across from the Naval Station gun range.. Mugu was first. We went up the Chumash trail to the saddle, turned right (southeast) and went up a steep trail to the summit. On the summit we found the American flag flying and a well worn register box.
After Mugu, we returned to the saddle and started up a use trail for Peak 1283. At a bump (1079’) before 1283, we found a pipe benchmark put there by the Division of Beaches and Parks. We continued on to Peak 1283. We did not find any register or BM. From 1283 we continued north to Laguna. Laguna has a large Naval communication base on the summit with a fence around it. We hiked down and around the fence to a point just east of the summit. It was as close as we could get without getting arrested. We were about 400’ from the summit.
From the Laguna, we hike down to an asphalt road and followed the road northeast to La Jolla. On the summit we found a VOR station but no register. We did find a BM dated 1964. From La Jolla, we hiked down a ridge, pushing our way through some chest high weeds, to the Chumash Trail. From there we hiked southwest about a mile to the saddle at Mugu then down to our cars. From the Mugu parking lot, we headed back to about a ½ mile past 23 North to the Robert H. Meyer State Park. The high point of this state park is right at the entrance. You don’t even have to get out of your vehicle to bag this one.
All and all it was another great day. Weather was perfect and the views of the ocean were spectacular.
