Ascent Trip Report

the weather was perfect: mid to high 50s with a continuous light breeze. clear skies.

in grant park there were almost no flowers: cows must have had them for snacks. once outside the park, where the cows couldn't reach, the flowers were awesome.

i saw nobody until i was nearing antler on the way back: then i saw someone on a horse, and another on an ATV, herding the cows. the cows were pretty unhappy with the situation, and complaining very loudly as they were herded downhill toward the parking lot near the lake.

there was essentially no negative signage anywhere along the trip.

all stats include the side peaks, and a couple rest stops.

you definitely want to do antler point in the outbound direction, because the hillside to the west is way too steep to be a pleasant ascent route.

the "open country" side-trips to antler and peak 2844 was on annoyingly potholed cow-trampled ankle-twisting grass-covered ground. it was much better on the road. the road had some boggy sections, especially in the park, and the cows had made complete messes of those sections.

starting from "twin gates" has become the "standard route" for this ridge hike, but i'm not sure it's the best choice (unless you want peak 2844 bonus peak as well). it looks to be about the same distance and slightly more elevation (like 200' total) if you start from grant lake trailhead. an advantage of starting from grant lake is that you'll shift some 400' of climbing from the end of the day to the beginning of the day when you're fresh. either way will work though.
