Ascent Trip ReportCompleted this highpoint after driving to it from Ft. Collins, CO. Used Waze to navigate, which took us up to I-80 in Wyoming, then off the interstate back into Colorado, dirt roads, including up and onto the mesa in the area of the high point (neat with the windmills) then into Nebraska. Just past the owners' place (where it looks like the road forks, but it really continues on the left fork and the right is their drive), maybe 200 yards, is the entrance. Waze actually had it up the road another 1/4 mile, so we backed up, paid our entrance fee and took the access road (note the spring loaded gates with the rubber ends that you are supposed to drive through - I will need to buff out those marks!). The access road, as I have read elsewhere, was recently improve with some supplemental gravel to even things out. We got up to the point in our rented Kia Soul; only the last 1/4 mile requires particular care.
There is no question the buffalo frequent the highpoint as they left their mark {ahem} everywhere near the marker. While it is not a mountain, the view is still impressive, especially to the west. You can also see the trip-state market about 1/2 mile away, although if you want to visit that you need to drive 7 miles to get to it (no thanks).
Upon exiting, we planned to continue across Nebraska. However, Waze, wanted us to backtrack the way we came in, which id not seems right. So we tried Google Maps, and it took us in the correct direction north (left). Following the roads back into Wyoming, we eventually got to I-80, and then headed west back into Nebraska (I live in the Washington, DC area, and going between Maryland, DC and Virginia in one drive is not uncommon, however, this just seemed more bassackwards somehow...).
Anyway, not sure I will ever get back, but #19 was worth the trip. |
