Ascent Trip Report

This is such a fantastic climb, but I can see why not many people do this one before the summer trailhead opens. This was a long, grueling and extremely rewarding two day climb. Duncan and I skinned from ~3200ft up to 7100 on March 30th, and spent the night. Today, March 31st, we started for the summit and encountered conditions too icy to ski around 8000ft, where we ditched the skis and skins and fastened our crampons to our ski boots. After a very cold, slow first hour we got into a groove and made the summit by 12:30. We both suspected this might be the ultra-prominent peak from which the most other ultras were visible. Today we could see South Sister, Jefferson, Hood, Rainier, Stuart, Glacier, and even Baker! Olympus might also be visible but there were some clouds out that way. Just a breathtaking summit view and an all-around solid, hard climb. None of the slopes we climbed on showed any signs of instability or avalanche risk, and the weather was perfect considering how dreary and wet it's been the last week (or several months) in Portland. We hiked back down to our skis and rode down all the way to the car, free-heeling some of the way as there were some flatter sections. By the end we were hurting a lot- sore muscles, huge blisters, the works. But we made it! We knew we were capable of a March ascent of Adams, but we still surprised ourselves by actually doing it. Really proud of this one! (and thoroughly exhausted)
