Ascent Trip ReportA note on our route: The Forest Service says that Snow King Sno Park "provides the closest access to the mountain" in the winter. Though true in a sense, we would have preferred to park at the Pineside Sno Park, as that puts you right onto the groomed FR 8225 and despite involving slightly more total gain yields a steadier downhill run on the descent. Snow King starts you higher but requires some pointless traversing and a demoralizing uphill on the return. This debate aside, the GPS track is pretty optimized for the ascent and descent below treeline. Our ascent took a different tack and included some unnecessary downhills which we were able to correct on the ski out.
We really enjoyed getting the mountain to ourselves during this early season climb, but it's safe to say we wouldn't have done it if we didn't live 11 hours away during the summertime. On the whole this was an amazing but physically punishing journey that I'd recommend with reservation. However, I can unreservedly vouch for the Pulled Pork Burrito at Everybody's Brewing, which weighs like four pounds.
