Ascent Trip ReportI hiked the Driskill Mountain Trail shortly after sunset. This is a pleasant walk along a gated forest road. I took the trail shortcut on the way in to save time as the light was dimming. Along the way I spotted a snake 6 feet ahead of me stretched out across the trail. I picked up a stick to push it aside and as I pointed the stick towards it I noticed its tail end was lighter. Suddenly the snake seemed to wake up, coiled itself, and vigorously rattled. I eventually skirted around the rattlesnake and reached the summit. On the return I followed the broad main route by headlamp. From photos I later decided this was a canebrake rattlesnake. |
