Ascent Trip ReportGetting to Sand Tank requires high clearance, but is not a bad road otherwise. There are numerous good places to camp on the road in after turning off Klondike Road.
The hike starts off along the Cottonwood Mountain trail, until branching off at Limestone Canyon. There is an intermittent trail that follows near the the bottom of the canyon. At about 5,800', head up the northwest slope to bypass peak 6420' on its west side. On the way up, we left the canyon a littler early taking the ridge to the left, but I don't recommend this route. After getting around peak 6420', the "fun" begins. Reference Rich Hensley's trip report for more details. All I can add to it is-
About 50' below "the nose" is a rock outcropping on the right side (as you're ascending)- go for that- from there, there's a clear path the pass just below the summit.
Also, towards the top, once you climb the first steep rock, you come to a rock ridge you need to cross, after which Rich says "the rest of way is clear to see" - it's not that there is a way that looks good, but that there's only one way that looks possible- that's the way. |
