Ascent Trip ReportMy usual hiking partner Emily wasn't around this weekend, but the weather reports for the north country were too good to ignore. So Sunday I woke up before 4am and made the 2 hour drive north to Franconia to do my first true winter solo. Parked off 93 in the Lafayette Place lot and was the first one to start up Lonesome Lake Trail at 6:55am. Early going up to Lonesome Lake was a piece of cake, all packed powder and microspikes did the trick.
Upon arriving at the lake I was a little disappointed to see that both Kinsmans were in the clouds but the view of Franconia Ridge from the hut was very nice as the sun rose behind the clouds partially covering the ridge. Folks were just waking up inside the hut so I headed up Fishin' Jimmys and after getting over the relatively flat first mile put on my snowshoes for both traction and to deal with the trail which still wasn't 100% packed after the big snow earlier in the week.
Fishin' Jimmys was a hard hike as I had expected. There are 3 major pitches where I was glad I had snowshoes on, I had crampons in my pack, but didn't go quite that far. Once I got up to the Kinsman Ridge trail there were another several steep sections to North Kinsman. The clouds had cleared the peak by the time I arrived so I took in the nice views of Franconia Ridge at the ledge before heading up the ridge to South Kinsman. |
