Ascent Trip Report

My fourth HP in a two day road trip. From Dog Canyon Rim I returned to NM-137 but instead of turning right to take me back to Carlsbad, I turned left towards El Paso Gap. Interesting drive. At the bottom of the rim the road to Dell City turns to gravel and it stays that way all the way to Pinon. Little signage and no services. Saw only one other vehicle. I picked up NM-506 eventually and took this road north to NM-24. Heading north on NM-24 I turned onto Chimney Canyon Rd (FR-176). The Boyce Canyon turnoff is 5.0 miles in. Sunflower Canyon is .9 mile past it. Its difficult to see since there is no visible road, no open gate, only a fence line and some beaten down grass. Best to look for the barbed wire gate. If you're coming in on Chimney Canyon Rd from the north, Sunflower Canyon is 1.5 miles from the junction of Chimney Canyon and Dog Canyon. Don't forget to close the gate behind you. I drove one mile up Sunflower Canyon, parking near a large green metal tank. The cattle thought I was bringing them food so they all crowded around my vehicle. It was a quick hike to the HP. I was first to sign in for 2017. I returned to NM-24 via Dog Canyon Rd (FR-252). Its 7.7 miles on FR-252 to NM-24. For anyone interested in using it to access One Tree Peak coming from Cloudcroft on NM-24, the turn-off is about .2 mile past mile marker 16. The road is marked with a sign saying, "Cdog".
