Ascent Trip Report

The physical though not emotional high point of a very rainy week in the Alps. (The plan was really to climb the Grossglockner, but there was simply too much snow to even make an attempt.) Unfortunately, the information about the snow conditions at the Zugspitze was not quite accurate which made me climb without proper snow gear. Starting out from Ehrwald, the first part of the climb was nice and not so challenging. After having lunch at the Wiener-Neustädter-Hütt I also had the top station clearly in sight. However, the kletterstieg leading to the top quickly disappeared in thick layers of snow and climbing solo soon became rather scary - and extremely demanding - as the terrain got steeper and the heavy snowfall began. I aimed for the old cable car station where I catched my breath and emptied the water in my boots for the third time (I will never ever forget my gaiters again!). To navigate through the snow the last part to the summit took all my remaining will-power, but I had not much of a choice but trying to get there before the Zugspitzbahn closed for the day. I have hardly ever felt so relieved when I, pretty exhausted and totally soaked, took the final steps up the stairs leading to the station...
