Ascent Trip Report

unsuccessful.

This TR adds info to Scott Surgent's TR of 2004 - one must read Scott.
This county has 5 candidate areas.

We first checked out the northern area just south of the Jim Hogg/Starr County Line. The best approach seems to be from the northwest - starting at JCT FM649/ranch road (signed "East Foundation", on the east side of FM649 and 3.8M N of the County Line (across the road on the W side is the "Dos Condados Ranch" entrance. From here it's a road walk of approx. 17 miles RT.

For the 4 southern areas we checked out access from FM2686 to the S, same as Scott. There are 2 possibilities. From JCT FM649/FM2686 (6.2M S of the County Line on FM649) we went E on 2686 for 3.9M to a left on El Macho Ranch Road, then N for 1M to a 4-way JCT, with all 3 roads gated with no restrictive signs. Straight ahead N is signed "El Mancho". No way to get to the ranch.
From this 4-way JCT it would be mostly a road hike of 6M RT to the 4 areas.
The other alternative is the ungated entrance signed "Rancho Nomar", 1M east of El Mancho Road on FM2686. This road heads north and if driveable could get one closer to the 4 areas. From FM2686 it would be mostly a road hike of 7M RT to the 4 areas.

Landowners/permission needs to be researched.

UPDATE 2017-11-22
Earlier this year I sent out 2 emails to the Starr County Chief Appraiser with no answer, also a letter to the El Mancho Ranch was returned "No such Address".
Don't know where to go so I've given up for now, another county filed in the "NOT ACCESSIBLE" category.

NB. FELLOW COUNTY HIGHPOINTER- should you have better luck, it would be appreciated if you include me in your party.
