Ascent Trip Reportroad/xcountry, successful at 3 areas (4,5,6) only .... the hike to the 3 areas and the scouting trip to the others took us abt 4 hours.
Jim Hogg County has 9 candidate high point areas, all nicely located on a N-S ridge line, about 5 miles E of the N-S FM649. For this first visit we were able to go to 3 of the 9 areas close to the roads, the others are far inside private property, much too risky without permission, especially in this part of Texas with all of the alien problem (read my TRs for my horrendous experiences at the English Benchmark and at the Victoria COHP).
We approached from the NE. We zeroed our odo at JCT HWY16/FM3073, just S of Hebbroville, and traveled W on FM3073.
00.0M ... JCT16/3073. drove westbound on 3073.
11.0M ... on the right is the gated Cohn Ranch Lane leading N 1.5M to the Cohn Ranch, then a possible 1 mile xcountry W to AREA 7 & 8. -- On the left is Martinez Road leading to AREAS 4 & 3 (PER BELOW). This road jogs in a southwestern direction, becoming Vela Pena CR and coming out at FM649 at Mile Marker "20.2M" (per below).
We continued driving west on FM3073.
11.7M ... gated road on the left leads to AREA 6. I walked the road SE/S for .75M, then a track on the right .25M N to the HP.
100 yds further W on 3073, I crawled under the fence on the right and went xcountry NW .3m to AREA 5.
16.2m ... T-JCT with FM649. Right here is a short distance N to ZAPATA COHP. We continued left southbound on 649.
20.2M ... Vela Pena CR on the left leads to AREAs 3 & 4 (see below). This road jogs in a NE direction, becoming Martinez Road and coming out at FM3073 at Mile Marker "11.0M" (per above). We continued S on 649
20.9M ... La Blanca Ranch Road on the left, no prohibitive signs. A possible route to AREA 1 & 2 about 5 miles to the E. Alternately these 2 areas can be reached by going xcountry south from Area 3. We continued S on 649.
24.2M ... badly overgrown track on the left with an unsigned gate leads 5 miles E to AREA 9 (satellite shows this to be a good road, not the case, not good). 250 yds N is a gated unsigned road or .5M S is another gated unsigned road that could be possible alternatives for Area 9.
DIRECTIONS TO AREAS 3 & 4
We went back to Mile Marker "20.2M" (JCT 649/Vela Pena CR) and zeroed our odo.
0.0M ... drove eastbound on Vela Pena Road, on route road makes a left/right jog
3.0M ... road turns left (N), an unsigned gate straight ahead (E) could be a stealth xcountry route for AREA 3 at 1 1/2 miles away. Wind Turbines in the distance. Then from Area 3 one could go xcountry south abt 2 miles to Areas 1 & 2.
4.0M ... road turns right E.
5.0M ... Garcia Vela Ranch Entrance on the right (tall fence), ranch house can be seen at 400 yds, no signs. A possible road route to AREA 3 at 1 1/2 mile.
5.6M ... Wind Farm Entrance on the right (tall fence) just over the crest of the road. I climbed over the tall fence and walked the road 1/4 mile to AREA 4.
5.8M ... road turns left (N) and we believe changes name to Martinez Road.
9.6M ... JCT FM3073/Martinez Road see Mile Marker "11.0M".
A lot of research and luck is required for this county.
As we left the JCT 3073/Martinez, the automatic transmission suddenly would not get out of first gear (something like the song "The Little Nash Rambler"). We slowly made our way back to Hebbronville in first gear. No help, the Escamilla GMC dealer suggested a dodge dealer, with the nearest being at Laredo at 60 miles. We agreed and to drive there would have taken the rest of the day, so we opted for a Tow Truck (450 USD). The driver "Willie" got us there by 15h30 hours. Laredo Dodge was waiting for us - GMC had called ahead. Within 90 minutes they came back with an all clear verdict (we of course were expecting the worst) !!! the problem had disappeared ????. They suggested that we stick around for a few days, suggesting it might come back, so we did (all was AOK). The generosity of Laredo Dodge was amazing - they didn't charge a cent for their work.
Earlier this year I sent out request-for-information-letters to the Jim Hogg County Appraisal District Office and directly to the Cohn/Garcia Vela/La Blancha Ranches (returned as wrong address), all unanswered.
Without permission I don't believe that this this county can be done, so for now its filed in the "NOT ACCESSIBLE" category.
NB: FELLOW COUNTY HIGHPOINTER - should you have better luck, it would be greatly appreciated if you include me in your party.
